450 Words on the Freestone MX Webcast

The webcast by Allisports yesterday from the Freestone MX national was a train wreck.

Allisports had a page to show live video, with a chat window and photos of the leaders. Nothing was right, and the chat was disgusting.

If someone was checking out the coverage to see what MX is about, they would have concluded that a a bunch of amateurs is running things. It was that bad!

I remember years ago when webcasting was new (just audio) and there were startup problems. People would complain, and I was one of those saying "Hey, it's free, stop whining!" But that was years ago. There is no reason to screw up totally anymore like yesterday.

A few observations:

The video didn't run right. It would stop and jump ahead like something wasn't set up correctly.

The announcing was fine, but what fans saw was out of sync with what the announcers were talking about.

They cut to interviews without sound while announcers were talking about the racing.

There was a place on the site for face shots of the top three, but they ran the wrong photos! Chad Reed sure looks a lot like Jessica Patterson. :)

The chat was pretty cool, but the content was embarrassing. While Chris Pourcel was racing, the chat was derailed by numerous haters talking about how much they hate him, hate France, and hate the French. WTF?

The fans in chat, when they were not hating on Pourcel, were chatting more about the webcast problems and making fun of it than they were chatting about the racing.

Overall it looked like something Beevis and Butthead put together.

OK, this didn't make it to 450 words, it's not worth any more anyway.

American Motorcyclist Association hires Jack Penton as Director of Operations

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to welcome Jack Penton to the position of AMA Director of Operations. Penton, an AMA Life Member who was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999 in honor of his off-road racing success, will start on June 1.

As director of operations, Penton will report directly to AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman, and will assist him in managing the day-to-day functions of the Association. Penton will also have direct responsibility for the Hall of Fame.

"Jack Penton's breadth of experience in the motorcycle industry gives him a fresh perspective that I'm excited to bring to the AMA," Dingman said. "His hands-on approach will help guide our staff as we continually seek better ways to serve our members and more effectively promote and protect the motorcycling lifestyle."

Penton has more than 40 years of experience in the motorcycle industry. Early in his career he worked for Penton Imports developing Penton motorcycles, a brand founded by his father, AMA Hall of Famer John Penton. Later, he worked for Kawasaki Motors, Malcolm Smith Racing and KTM America. Most recently, Penton served with Tucker Rocky Distributing, a world leader in the distribution of motorcycle merchandise.

An AMA member for 45 years, Penton is also chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation (AMHF) Board of Directors, the fundraising body for the Hall of Fame, a position he will relinquish prior to June 1. Having served on the AMHF board for three years, Penton has watched the AMA make major improvements at a crucial time.

"I am eager to join the AMA staff, and I look forward to helping the Association become a more powerful voice for America's motorcyclists," Penton said. "The threats to motorcycling are greater today than ever before. Now is the time to secure the rights of motorcyclists in America, but to do so the AMA membership needs to grow many times over.

"The AMA has its priorities in order and has made the commitments needed to expand the organization," Penton said. "Now is the time for motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere to join us so that we can respond with strength to the forces that want to take away our rights as motorcyclists."

Effective June 1, those wishing to contact Penton can send him an e-mail at jpenton@ama-cycle.org, or call (614) 856-1900.

About the American Motorcyclist Association

motorcycling and promoted the motorcycle lifestyle. AMA members come from all walks of life, and they navigate many different routes on their journey to the same destination: freedom on two
wheels. As the world's largest motorcycling rights organization, the AMA advocates for motorcyclists' interests in the halls of local, state and federal government, the committees of international governing organizations, and the court of public opinion. Through member clubs, promoters and partners, the AMA sanctions more motorsports competition and motorcycle recreational events than any other organization in the world. AMA members receive money-saving discounts from dozens of well-known suppliers of motorcycle services, gear and apparel, bike rental, transport, hotel stays and more. Pit Lounge to serve original “Parmigiano-Reggiano” cheese throughout 2010

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 27 April 2010 – Following an agreement between Youthstream and the “Consortium of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese”, an authority controlling and marking the worldwide famous Italian cheese Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan), the Pit Lounge Restaurant will benefit from a supply of Parmigiano-Reggiano at all Grand Prix’s of the 2010 FIM Motocross World Championship.

Established in 1934, the Consortium gathers all the producers of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese - dairies that receive the milk from dedicated farmers of the area of origin (provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Mantua on the right bank of the river Po and Bologna on the left side of the river Reno).

The purposes of the Consortium are:
-safeguarding and protecting the production and sale of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and its designation, by carrying out a careful surveillance of the production, sales, use of the designation and marks;
-promoting and advertising the awareness of the product with the aim of fostering its consumption, favouring its sales and export;
-safeguarding product typicality and features;
-implementing initiatives for the qualitative perfecting and improvement in view of a continuous technical support to the Consortium members;
-distinguishing and guaranteeing the product by applying marks and stamps;

Parmigiano-Reggiano is one of the oldest and richest cheeses known in the world. It is still produced as it was nine centuries ago: same ingredients, same processing technique and same artisan care. It is a totally natural cheese.

Presentation of Grand Prix of Limburg 2010 and Red Bull FIM MXoN 2012

VALKENSWAARD (THE NETHERLANDS), 25 April 2010 – With Valkenswaard being the first Grand Prix of 2010 held in Benelux, the organizing committee of the Grand Prix of Limburg at Lommel on the August 1 weekend took the chance to introduce the 2010 event and the eagerly awaited 2012 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations at Lommel as well.

Through the active involvement of the Lommel’s municipality and the governments of Limburg and Flanders, the plans of turning the already permanent facility into a Motocross Arena by 2012 continue successfully. The 2010 Grand Prix of Limburg will see a new bank built to improve the spectators’ view on Belgium’s most famous sand track as the event is due to happen on the August 1 weekend together with the fifth round of the FIM Veterans’ World Cup.

The cooperation in between World MX Legends Eric Geboers (five World Titles) and Stefan Everts (10 World Titles) continues and the common goal of the two Belgians remain the same: organizing a superb 2012 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations which will mark the event’s comeback to Lommel after a long absence – in 1981 the American team broke Belgium’s winning streak at Lommel.

Other than Geboers and Everts, attending the press conference were also Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo, FIM/CMS President Dr. Wolfgang Srb, Deputy of Province Limburg Mr. Walter Cremers, Mayor of Town Lommel Mr. Peter Van Velthoven and President of Lommel’s Motoclub Mr. Jaak Van Velthoven.

MX Legend David Bailey teams up with Youthstream for US GP promotion

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 15 April 2010 – In preparation of the forthcoming Grand Prix of the United States, set to take place in Glen Helen Raceway on the May 30 weekend, series promoter Youthstream and MX Legend David Bailey of USA have reached an agreement which will see the two time US Grand Prix winner play an active role in the event’s organization.

Bailey won the Grand Prix of the United States in 1983 (Unadilla, 250cc class) and in 1985 (Carlsbad, 500cc class). The American Motocross Legend, who is now enjoying a successful career as TV commentator, will be enhancing the promotion of the USA Grand Prix in Glen Helen and will also commentate the Grand Prix on television together with Youthstream TV Commentator Paul Malin, a former GP winner himself.

The news of Bailey’s participation in this Grand Prix builds a strong link with the previous editions of the event. The 2010 Grand Prix of USA at Glen Helen promises to establish a good base for the FIM Motocross World Championship in the United States area.

Giuseppe Luongo, Youthstream President, said: “We are delighted having David co-operate with us!  He is one of my heroes, at the beginning of my career David raced at the first big event I organized, the Motocross of Nations in Maggiora in 1986, and from that moment I have had great respect for him.  I am sure, like in Maggiora, we will do something great together!”

Dr. Wolfgang Srb, FIM/CMS President, continued: “David Bailey was a great rider and is still considered by many fans all over the world as a true legend and icon of Motocross. He will do great!”

When asked about the US Grand Prix return, David Bailey said: “Hearing that a GP had returned to the USA was great news, plus it is very close to my house. I look forward to seeing the Europeans in person and to soak up that Grand Prix atmosphere. Can't wait! I hope the fans are as intrigued with this event as I am and come out and pack the hillsides. I also hope some of the best riders here in the US decide to participate to stay sharp and give the fans a little extra to cheer about.

In 1983 Bailey took 1st place in the 250 GP in Unadilla and in 1985 another 1st place in the 500 GP at Carlsbad; what will it take this year to win the Grand Prix of USA?
“It is very hard to say who will win. Obviously the winners of the first rounds will be favorites, but it is possible some of the American riders participating will mix things up a little bit. I always jumped at the chance to race the GP's. Racing against new competition, changing my number, running our Nation’s colors and a slightly different format and rules always made it a fun new challenge.

Being a Tv commentator for the GP, how will Bailey welcome the fans watching the US GP?
“It has been many years since the GP's were held here in the US and it is my hope that this event will be as exciting as it was during the 70's and 80's when ABC's Wide World of Sports covered the Carlsbad USGP. As kids, all of us American riders dreamed of winning that race against Europe's finest on TV as it was the only televised event of that era. I am glad it is back and glad to be part of the broadcast!”

GEICO MiniMotoSX features an international field of the world’s top mini bike racers

Eighteen of the world’s top mini bike stars representing seven countries will battle the Americans for the AMA No. 1 plate

ANAHEIM, Calif. (April 19, 2010) – When the dust finally settles on this Icelandic volcano, it’s going to kick right back up again in Las Vegas when mini bike tires spin and dirt flies for the seventh running of the GEICO Powersports MiniMotoSX, presented by Monster Energy, at the Orleans Arena. And on the line is the first-ever MMSX World Final race, featuring – along with the American greats – 18 of the world’s top international mini cycle racing stars representing seven countries on four continents.

“Given our extensive international field this year, the MiniMotoSX World Final race at this year’s GEICO MiniMotoSX will be a true test in crowning the world’s absolute top mini cycle racer,” said Mike Karsting, VP of Events for Source Interlink Media. “Invitations to the MMSX World Final went out right after the conclusion of last year’s race and the response from all over Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia has been incredible. Everyone is gunning for the Americans in an effort to win the World MMSX title here on our soil.

“It’s going to make for some unreal racing here at the Orleans on May 7th.”

The list of mini riders battling for the coveted title of MMSX World Champ reads like a who’s who of the mini industry’s top racers – similar to a gate featuring the likes of McGrath, Carmichael, Stewart, Villopoto and Pourcel on the big bikes. Led by defending French 10” mini cycle champion Mike Valade, the hyper-fast French contingent will give the Americans – led by defending GEICO MMSX champ Michael Blose, and former champ Derek Costella – all they can handle. Other French greats making the trip over include: Jimmy Peyras (12” French champ), Alexander BarbosaRemi, TirvaudeyBaptiste Alexandre and French female mini racer Laura Bruneau will attempt to top the women’s class.

Additional European stars making the trek over to challenge for the MMSX World Final title include: Swedish great Ander Persson, Belgium’s David Segers and the UK’s top mini cycle racer, David Alexander.

Australia should give French riders a good run for their money as the No. 1 challengers to the top Americans. The Aussies are led by current national champion Brad Smith, Tasmanian champ Garry WellmanShaun Howe, veteran great Matt Skerrett andMike Reefman – who raced the MXGPs in the past.

Japan will also send over two of its top mini racers in Tomokuni Osada and Hirouma Igura, while dropping down from Canada to spin some laps in hopes of bringing home the MMSX World Final title will be Danny Riverin and Sam Lessard.

“GEICO MiniMotoSX hasn’t enjoyed an international field of this magnitude since the event’s inception in 2004,” added Karsting. “The eventual 2010 MMSX World Final champ has a big job ahead of him, which will no doubt make for some incredible racing for those in attendance.”

The annual GEICO MiniMotoSX, presented by Monster Energy, is the largest indoor motorsports competition of its kind. With more than 600 registered riders in 2009 the event literally allows for mini bike enthusiasts to become part of the show. As one racer put it: “At GEICO MiniMotoSX you don’t just show up and watch racing in Vegas – you boot up and get on the track yourself to race in front of a packed house at the Orleans.” Featuring numerous classes at all age and ability levels, GEICO MiniMotoSX delivers an unforgettable day of racing action for both fans and racers alike, along with an affordable ‘Vegas experience’ given the hotel and ticket package at the Orleans Hotel and Arena. Registration for the event is open right now on www.minimotosx.com

Tickets On-Sale NOW at the Orleans Arena, 888-234-2334; or online at www.OrleansArena.com
