New Mexico governor vetoes raid on off-highway vehicle fund

New Mexico governor vetoes raid on off-highway vehicle fund

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson rejected a proposal to raid the state's off-highway vehicle (OHV) trail safety fund as part of a plan to balance the state budget, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

On Nov. 9, Richardson used his line-item veto power for the state budget to ensure that $800,000 targeted for transfer to the state general fund remained in the trail safety fund. He noted the program "is funded by fees and designed to protect the safety of outdoorsmen and other New Mexicans who use off-highway vehicles."

The New Mexico Trail Safety Fund was set up primarily to build and maintain trails.

"This is a wonderful 11th-hour reprieve for a vital program that was created by users and is funded by users," said AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris. "At a time when state lawmakers around the nation will soon begin their legislative sessions and will once again be looking for ways to balance their state budgets, they need to remember that motorcyclists and ATV riders pay the same taxes and fees as other citizens and, in addition, pay for their own programs as well.

"The New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance did a great job alerting concerned OHVers in New Mexico to let the governor know that the fund shouldn't be raided," Haris said. "Gov. Richardson obviously listened, and recognized the importance of the OHV program.

"The AMA thanks the governor for his veto, and we encourage New Mexico riders to contact him and express their thanks for protecting OHV funds in New Mexico," said Haris.

While the governor spared the OHV program and several other funds from raids, the budget still transferred nearly $110 million from special funds into the state's general-purpose fund.

The AMA has kept a close watch this year on state efforts to raid designated motorcycle funds. In August, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's administration backed away from a plan to raid that state's Motorcycle Safety and Education Program of $800,000 after a public outcry related to raids of special funds to balance the state budget.

"When lawmakers or government bureaucrats talk about raiding our programs' funds, it's crucial that all motorcyclists and ATVers let them know that this is simply unacceptable," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "Even when it appears that the money is lost, we need to keep the pressure on. New Mexico and Ohio are good examples of enthusiasts not giving up, and ultimately winning these battles."

To stay on top of what's happening in your state, just go to the Rights section of the AMA website atAmericanMotorcyclist.com.

About the American Motorcyclist Association
Since 1924, the AMA has protected the future of motorcycling and promoted the motorcycle lifestyle. AMA members come from all walks of life, and they navigate many different routes on their journey to the same destination: freedom on two wheels. As the world's largest motorcycling organization, the AMA advocates for motorcyclists' interests in the halls of local, state and federal government, the committees of international governing organizations, and the court of public opinion. Through member clubs, promoters and partners, the AMA sanctions more motorsports competition and motorcycle recreational events than any other organization in the world. AMA members receive money-saving discounts from dozens of well-known suppliers of motorcycle services, gear and apparel, bike rental, transport, hotel stays and more. Through its Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, the AMA preserves the heritage of motorcycling for future generations.

Husqvarna Motorcycles North America sponsoring AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that Husqvarna Motorcycles North America has signed on as a sponsor of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this Dec. 5 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas.

"We are thrilled to have Husqvarna's participation in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony," said AMA Special Events and Marketing Director Tigra Tsujikawa. "With a lineage dating back more than a century, this historic marque's motorcycling history runs very deep."

Husqvarna Motorcycles North America Sales and Marketing Director Scot Harden, an accomplished off-road racer who was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2008, said that the company is proud to recognize the achievement of motorcycling's heroes.

"For a company like Husqvarna, the history of our great sport and the pioneers who laid the foundation for its success share more than just a casual connection," Harden said. "The name Husqvarna is synonymous with two-wheeled champions and heroes. We are proud to have played a major role in the growth in popularity of off-road recreation that started in the '60s and continues through today. It's only fitting that we step up and support the AMA and the Hall of Fame Museum to help ensure that the proud legacy of the motorcycling community has a fitting home that will inspire future generations of motorcyclists. This is why we support the Hall of Fame and will continue to do so for years to come."

The 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is part of a larger celebration at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas that includes the AMA Racing Championship Banquet and the 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Concours d'Elegance, which will feature some of the most beautiful motorcycles in existence.

The racing banquet will kick off the festivities on the evening of Dec. 4. It will recognize the champions from 2009 AMA Racing premier events and series. In addition, special awards, such as the AMA Racing Athlete of the Year, the AMA Racing Sportsman of the Year and the AMA Racing Female Rider of the Year, will be awarded.

Following the Concours d'Elegance on Saturday, Perry King, legendary actor of stage, screen and TV, will serve as master of ceremonies as the AMA officially welcomes the 2009 class to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

This year's inductees are industry innovator Robert Bates, off-road racer Randy Hawkins, suspension pioneer Gilles Vaillancourt, off-highway rights activist Mona Ehnes, industry entrepreneurs and technological trailblazers Geoff and Bob Fox, longtime motorcycle safety proponent David Hough, noted race team manager Gary Mathers and successful dirt-track racer and tuner Chuck Palmgren.

Advance ticket purchase is required for both evening events at a cost of $49 per person per single event, or $89 per person for both events. Tickets will remain on sale through Nov. 29. Admission to the Hall of Fame autograph session and the Concours d'Elegance bike show is free. For more information, visitAmericanMotorcyclist.com/LetsRock.

AMA announces 2010 AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship Series schedule

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today the 2010 schedule for the AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship Series, which determines the country's top desert racers every year in a number of skill- and machine-based classes.

New for 2010, the AMA has partnered with the National Hare & Hound Association (NHHA), which will promote the series. The NHHA is made up of four AMA District 37 clubs: Desert MC, Vikings MC, Four Aces MC and 100's MC.

"Similar to how our partnership with the National Enduro Promoting Group has reaped benefits for the AMA/Rekluse National Enduro Championship Series presented by Moose Racing, working with the NHHA will help elevate the AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship Series in 2010," said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley.

The NHHA's Ryan Sanders says the group is already moving ahead to advance the 2010 championship.

"Our goal is to elevate the AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship Series and return it to its position as a premier national championship," Sanders said. "We intend to do that by securing sponsorship and working with the clubs to achieve uniformity. We want our racers to be greeted by the same format, the same sign-up procedures, and the same signage at every event. Beyond that, we intend to promote, promote, promote.

"We've also teamed up with accomplished desert racer Chris Blais as series manager," Sanders continued. "Chris brings his years of racing experience to help make sure we keep this a series built for racers and not necessarily a series built just for profit."

Bromley said the first step was putting together an exciting schedule for racers.

"The 10-round schedule will once again provide the country's top desert racers with a number of exciting courses," Bromley said. "In addition, with multiple rounds scheduled after the summer break, we're expecting the suspense of the championship to go down to the wire, bringing many racers and fans out to enjoy the fall portion of the program."

The 2010 AMA Racing National Hare & Hound Championship Series will begin Jan. 24 at the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area near Lucerne, Calif. The 10-round championship will see action in California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah. The complete schedule is below.

Carmichael Finishes 12th at Texas Motor Speedway

Earns Sixth Top-15 Finish of Season

FORT WORTH, Texas (November 8, 2009) — Starting the Winstar World Casino 350K from the ninth position at Texas Motor Speedway, Ricky Carmichael and the No. 4 Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado ran as high as sixth before crossing the finish line in the 12th position. The finish marked Carmichael’s sixth top-15 finish of the season.

“We just lost the handling there a little bit,” said Carmichael following the race. “It was a good run.  I’m happy.  It’s nice to finally finish a race with nothing wrecked.  I had a blast this year with these guys.  I’ve got to thank KHI and obviously Monster Energy. I’m happy to bring this thing home in one piece and get a solid run.”

Making the final start of his 16-race schedule with KHI this season, Carmichael slipped from the ninth starting position to 16th before the first caution of the night waved. The team decided to make no changes to the handling of the truck and brought Carmichael down pit road first for four tires followed by a second stop for fuel.

Restarting the race from the 21st position, Carmichael told the team the truck was awesome and began to make his move toward the front. By lap 50 Carmichael was able to move into the top 15. Several laps later on lap 54, the caution was again displayed for debris. Fighting a loose-handling truck, Carmichael came down pit road for right-side tires and a second time for fuel. With help from crew chief John Monsam, Carmichael opted to turn his fans off to help tighten the truck rather than make adjustments to the truck. The race restarted on lap 59 with the No. 4 Monster Energy Silverado in the 12th position.

Continuing to run fast laps, Carmichael moved into the top 10 on lap 65. On lap 88 under the final caution of the race, running in the ninth position, Carmichael radioed the team that the truck was a little loose. The team pitted for four fresh tires with an air-pressure adjustment and a second time for fuel. With a fast stop, Carmichael restarted the race on lap 93 in the ninth spot.

Maintaining his position in the top 10, Carmichael was running eighth when he radioed the team on lap 114 to say the truck was really loose. Several laps later he again said the truck was bad loose, falling to 12th on lap 118. Making adjustments to the handling of the truck by adjusting the fans, Carmichael remained in the 12th position when he crossed the start-finish line on lap 147. The 12th-place finish marked Carmichael’s sixth top-15 finish in 16 Truck Series starts this season.

Kyle Busch scored the win followed by Matt Crafton, KHI teammate Ron Hornaday, Todd Bodine and Colin Braun.

Brammo Introduces New Price For The Enertia Plug-In Electric Motorcycle, Now $7,995

The 33% savings is a direct result of engineering advances

Ashland, Oregon - November 10, 2009 – BRAMMO, maker of plug-in electric motorcycles, announced today it is dropping the price of the all-electric BRAMMO Enertia powercycle, to $7,995.  Customers are also eligible for a 10% federal income tax credit, further reducing the price to $7,195.

“While this pricing breakthrough is innovative in transportation, it is in line with consumer electronics, where engineering and production advances get passed on to customers as quickly as possible to stimulate adoption of the technology,” stated Craig Bramscher, founder and CEO of Brammo.  “The Enertia is consumer electronics that you can ride and BRAMMO’s engineers are able to deliver a better value proposition to customers sooner than a traditional transportation company.”

Today, qualified customers can walk into select Best Buy stores and with a $2,000 down payment, ride out on an Enertia for $249 a month with 24-month no interest with payments financing offered through Best Buy.  The Enertia can also be purchased direct from www.BRAMMO.com in select states where the product is not yet available at a Best Buy.

The BRAMMO Enertia powercycle is the ideal commuter vehicle as it blends an exhilarating ride experience with environmental consciousness and low operating costs. The Enertia has a top speed of over 60 mph, has a range of 42 miles and charges in about four hours by plugging into a standard wall outlet—all while using less than a dollar in electricity per 100 miles ridden.

“With this price reduction Brammo has positioned electric vehicles for the mass market and consumers can now be part of a solution to the transportation crises that America is facing,” said Bramscher.  “The wait is over, consumers can now buy an EV that is price competitive with a gas burning alternative and enjoy reduced maintenance and substantially lower ownership costs.”

Fans and media can follow Brammo on Twitter @BrammoSays and on its Facebook fan page, Brammo Powercycles
