Musquin vs Goncalves duel to end at Honda Grand Prix of Brazil

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 8 September 2009 – The FIM Motocross World Championship will come to an end this weekend in Brazil where the series is back after a 10 year absence.

Cairoli has already wrapped up the MX1 Title but Nagl, Philippaerts, Desalle, De Dycker and Coppins will battle tooth and nail to take the best possible spot inside the top six.

The Honda GP of Brazil at Canelinha will surely hand out the MX2 World Title as KTM factory team mates Musquin and Goncalves are the sole riders left with a Title chance.

MX1

Cairoli made it to his third World crown in Lierop ten days ago as the Yamaha Red Bull De Carli rider took his maiden MX1 Title. Cairoli, who rode with a painful left knee in the Dutch GP, underwent surgery immediately after and is now  ready to face Canelinha, a new venue to the FIM Motocross World Championship MX1/MX2.

While the Italian will ride with no particular goals, runner up in the Championship Nagl needs to fight tooth and nail to defend the runner up spot from last year’s MX1 World Champion Philippaerts.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Nagl is 24 points ahead of a hungry Philippaerts wanting to make up for the loss of the Title with the runner up spot in the series.

Behind the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross rider is this season’s revelation Desalle of LS Motors Honda. At his first and last season with the squad taking the Belgian to his maiden GP win in Czech Republic and to other five podiums, Desalle wants to reward the team with a top three finish in the series.

Desalle is just two points away from Philippaerts but Lierop winner De Dycker of Teka Suzuki WMX1 is fifth in the Championship at a two point distance from his Belgian countryman.

Coppins completes a close top six with Tanel Leok in seventh.

MX2

The 2009 MX2 World Title is an affair in between the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo as current leader Musquin and Goncalves are all set on the Honda Grand Prix of Brazil. Both are looking for their maiden Title, with the sole difference that 2009 will be the last chance for Portuguese Goncalves to take an MX2 Title – he will move to MX1 in 2010 when the MX2 maximum age limit will be 23.

24 year old Goncalves will look at Brazil as a sort of second home Grand Prix. On the other hand Musquin is first in the Championship with an advantage of 22 points. The Frenchman has won in Lierop to gain one more win than Goncalves, as he also has five more moto wins.

Bud Racing Kawasaki PSM’s Paulin sits in third place but has lost his Title chances at Lierop where he scored only seven points at the end of a troubled weekend.

Guarneri of Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci Motocross is a distant fourth in the Championship ahead of fifth placed Roczen who took his third season podium at Lierop.

South American speed star Martin Davalos will also join the MX2 series this weekend.

Ricky Carmichael

No. 4 Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado

Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 18 of 25 – Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway

ARCH OF OPPORTUNITY: Ricky Carmichael will head to Gateway (Ill) International Raceway for the first time as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series makes their 18th stop of the 2009 season.

Thus far in 2009, Carmichael has earned his career best Truck Series finish of seventh at Kentucky Speedway.  He has recorded  five top-15 finishes in 12 starts this season.  According to NASCAR’s Loop Data Statistics, Carmichael has made a total of 267 green-flag passes and has recorded 10 of the fastest laps run this season.

Even though Carmichael has never been to the 1.25-mile track, he and the No. 4 Monster Energy team can lean on three-time Truck Series champion, current point leader and 2008 Gateway International Raceway winner Ron Hornaday,as well as 1998 Gateway Truck Series winner and Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) General Manager Rick Careilli for tips on racing at the facility.  Carmicheal also has KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick to go to for tips on racing at Gateway.  Harvick is a multi-race winner at the track.

“Rick (Carelli) and (Ron) Hornaday have been real assests this season,” said Carmichael.  “They have both really helped to get me going in the right direction on some of these new tracks. I’m really fortunate to have them to lean on.  I think they help make me a better driver and our team better with their advice. I also go to Kevin (Harvick) for advice a lot, he has driven at 99.9% of the tracks we go to before and has years of experience that he can pass along to me.”

ALL BETS ARE OFF: While in Chicago for the inaugural Truck Series race, Carmichael and KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick made a little wager over dinner.  They decided that whichever driver was able to score a top-five finish in their respective series first (Carmichael in the Truck Series and Harvick in the Cup Series) could buzz the other’s head.  The challenge would begin in Iowa for Carmichael and Atlanta for Harvick.  Even though Carmichael and the No. 4 Monster Energy team made a valiant comeback to finish 13th in the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway, it was Harvick and the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil team that was able to strike first scoring a second-place finish in the Pep Boys 500.  Harvick won the bet in the first week of competition.  A date or location has yet to be set.

BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER RICKY CARMICHAEL:

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RACING AT GATEWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME?

“I’m really excited.  I think coming off of last week in Iowa, where we really struggled, but came back for a decent finish gives me confidence going to a new place.  I’m really proud of our team. We seem to improve each week.  It is nice when I can be in the truck for a few consecutive weeks.  I think that really helps our performance.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 4 Monster Energy team will unload truck chassis No.032 at Gateway International Raceway.  Chassis No. 032 was previously raced by Carmichael at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis where he had a top-five run going until he was forced into the wall late in the race by another truck.  The team repaired the chassis in time for J.R. Fitzpatrick to climb behind the wheel at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.  Fitzpatrick was the top finishing rookie at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” finishing 11th.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week at the inaugural race at Iowa Speedway, the No. 4 Monster Energy team had to pull out a back-up truck following a practice crash.  Carmichael qualified in the 26th position, but was able to find a good groove and worked his way into the top 15 by the half-way point.  Carmichael was able to gain several more positions to finish the 200-lap race in the 13th position.

Record breaking entry list of 36 Teams announces sensational Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 4 September 2009 – A record breaking entry list of 36 Teams ready to battle for the Chamberlain Trophy is the first preview of a fantastic Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations, set to happen in Franciacorta, Italy, on the October 4 weekend.

This year’s Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations will see the participation of 36 Teams for a total of 108 riders, something that never happened in the previous 62 editions of the most important off road event in the world.

The presence of the top 10 teams in the 2008 edition’s standings is confirmed as Team USA will try to keep up their winning streak. On the other hand home Team Italy, including recently crowned MX1 World Champion Tony Cairoli,  will try and take the Chamberlain Trophy back to the country hosting the event again after an absence of 23 years.

With the most successful Motocross and Supercross riders on the planet being spread within the 36 squads, this is going to be an extremely hard fought Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations as none of the teams looks the absolute favourite.

Among World Champions such as Ramon (Belgium), Cairoli and Philippaerts (Italy), Reed (Australia), Rattray (South Africa), there will be also young guns such as Dungey and Weimer (USA), Musquin and Paulin (France), Roelants and Desalle (Belgium), Tonus (Switzerland), Karro (Latvia). Two of the youngest riders will be 15 year old sensations Roczen (Germany) and Herlings (Netherlands) – the latter will turn 15 on September 12.

With so many Nations entering the event, crowds of fans from all over the world have already hit the road to reach the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations’ venue in early October and experience an unforgettable event, as well as the Off Road Awards to be held on the Saturday.

The official FIM entry list of the event can be found in attachment to this email or here.

Giuseppe Luongo, the President of Youthstream, stated: “This is absolutely fantastic! Despite some who took the occasion of the world economical crisis to talk negatively about Motocross’ development and despite some countries using the same excuse to not come to the biggest Motocross event in the world, Motocross runs very well and continues to grow.  Every year it gets bigger and bigger, fans like following us, media continue covering our sport even more than ever, international sponsors keep supporting us. We believe the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations 2009 will be a simply outstanding event; the pre-selling is going great and the VIP has already sold out. There are many countries with the possibility of taking the victory, the show will be unbelievable.

“For this event we are offering fans great opportunities; there will be three hours of worldwide live television with all Youthstream’s television partners, 24 hours of live coverage on Freecaster.tv showing the races, interviews, behind the scene curiosity, historical MXoN images and more.  For those wanting to be a part of this historical weekend of Motocross we have prepared a tremendous theater setting with a spectacular Motocross track and 100% visibility for the public. Camping areas are only 50 meters away from the venue, all the parking areas are on hard standing guaranteeing the total comfort for the guests and fans also in case of bad weather. There are more than 20 different restaurants/panini places on-site and live music, freestyle, and many other various activities will keep everyone entertained throughout the entire weekend.”

FIM/CMS President Dr. Wolfgang Srb continued: “I am simply stunned. What more can I say? 36 Nations have entered, from all continents in the world. The highest number of entries in history. This will be the biggest and greatest Motocross event of all times. The fans have named this event already since years "Olympics of Motocross", and they are right.

“Let me thank all the Federations that send their best riders to Franciacorta. Let me thank the riders, who take great pride and honour in representing their country and their colours. Let me invite the Motocross fans from all over the world to come and watch the race. We are looking forward to celebrate the greatest weekend of the sport we all love so much.”

How Youthstream manages the FIM Motocross World Championship

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 3 September 2009 - Giuseppe Luongo is the President of Youthstream, the company promoting the Motocross World Championship on behalf of the FIM. As a promoter, Youthstream has got its own type of management of the sport. This interview gives an idea of how Youthstream is developing the most important Motocross series in the World.

Selecting the best through a pyramid structure

Q: The World Championship seems to be an exclusive series which not many can access. Is this concept correct?

A: This is how it should be, the World Championship is the top of the pyramid with a base of Continental Championships. Basically the World Championship, which is competitive at 360 degrees both for the riders aiming at the Championship and for the teams wishing to remain in the paddock, is for the elite, the very best, it is not for everyone. On the other hand the Continental Championships, which are the base to enter the World Championship, are those where all riders can participate. The World Championship must be only for the ‘crème de la crème’; the best riders, the best teams, the best motorbikes, etc. It is quite understandable I think.  I have never seen a young (or old for that matter) fast and talented rider stop racing due to not being accepted in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

_mz14685_1_400
Giuseppe Luongo, the Youthstream President

Q: Is there a risk to remain short with teams and riders by adopting this idea of management?

A: To have the elite brought together in the FIM Motocross World Championship, it means that there is a selection from a larger group. The higher the average level, the harder the competition is to get into the World Championship, but in the end a group of teams will always be found. In 2010 Youthstream wants to have less teams as this will increase the quality of racing, and not because of the crisis.

Q: 40 riders at the gate?

A: When we set the rule of 40 riders on the gate and the rule of the qualifying heats on Saturday, we immediately saw an increase of competition and a better response from the fans who can profit of Saturday’s racing. This rule remains in force but we would like to concentrate the MX1 into 30 selected top riders to keep the level more homogeneous.

mx1start_mxgp7gb_400

The start of the MX1 moto 1 at Mallory this year

Q: Why only the MX1?

A: The MX2 class is a sort of “ladder” to get to the MX1 and there are a lot of riders with a good speed, and there are seven or eight riders coming from Continental Championship every year. The MX1 class is the point of the pyramid, it is exclusively for a group of riders who have gone through a tough selection and there are just a few who have the necessary skills to compete at this level with the 450cc machines. Furthermore, the MX2 is a class for younger riders who need to mature and gain a bit more experience before moving into the MX1 class, it makes no sense for a rider to stay forever in the MX2 class, once they are ready they should move up to the MX1 to display their full potential in the most competitive Motocross series in the world. The philosophy of the sport is to break the limits, look at how the sprinter Usain Bolt of Jamaica is breaking all records in running, we do not want riders to get stuck in one place when there is a chance to go further , this is why we introduced the age limitation in the MX2.  MX1 and MX2 need to have their differences, there is no sport in the world where two championships are practically the same.

Q: Is this new rule troubling the teams who have to replace riders because of this?

A: There is no new rule.  Teams continuously replace riders, they are used to that.  We announced this rule in December 2007, I presume everyone had the time to organize themselves for 2010.  It all boils down to the fact that some teams work well, and some others do not - and those who do not, do not deserve to race in the World Championship.

Q: What do you mean when you speak about the pyramid structure?

A: We promote not only the FIM Motocross World Championship but Motocross in general, we have our management spread all over a series of Championships which are useful to keep the sport growing. The base of the pyramid consists in the Continental Championships 65cc and 85cc, the 125 2T or the 150 4T, and the European EMX2 (250 4T), Youthstream manages the European Motocross Championships.  These series create a lot of new talents, statistics show many young riders in the FIM Motocross and Supercross World Championships come from these Championships. The riders of the UEM European series compete quality circuits with a good organization.  Musquin, Roczen and Paulin are just a few great riders and true professionals who have been able to express their talent through a Continental Championship, now they race in the MX2 class and are on their way to MX1 – the point of the pyramid.  There are more coming for next year (Herlings, Brakke, and others).

Q: Doping can be a shortcut to break through these ranks.

A: Having been a rider myself, I am proud of our riders, I am respectful of the hard work and sacrifices they do to make it, and I am ashamed when I hear such gossip and of people underestimating their efforts. The FIM is very transparent in this matter, making controls and communicating the results via a press release, which is of course available for everyone to read. When a rider has been found positive to taking forbidden substances they have always been heavily punished, as they should be.  Talking about doping when there is no evidence is just gossip that is detrimental to our sport.

I believe that these rumors are spread by those who are less talented and compensate their lack of talent with effort.  So it’s normal that riders with less talent are more tired at the end of a race than those with more talent and use less effort.  Then we get the unprofessional journalists who use this gossip to create their story.

The ghost of the crisis

Q: What about the teams quitting because of the crisis?

A: I would like to know who the teams are who are quitting.  To be honest every year there is a so called “crisis” which some people complain about or use to justify problems. Even football teams complain despite having hundreds of thousands spectators and millions from the TV rights. For the teams it is necessary to work continuously if they want to keep their spot in this series, quitting is not due to some sort of crisis, it is a sign that the quitter does not have the skills to continue. If there was this crisis then the Promoter would have the same problems as the teams because many of the sponsors are the same! As you can see it is a difficult moment but we are far from being in trouble, and I frankly do not see any major team stopping.

Q: Is there an example you can mention?

A: Yes there is, the manufacturer change of Claudio De Carli and his team is an important issue of the year; I am happy to see that when a professional team loses an opportunity they find another. This demonstrates that in the FIM Motocross World Championship those who work well can continue and even go forward with their business.

Many new sponsors came in 2009 supporting top teams; Casino Bonver with TM, Welcome to Istanbul with Kawasaki, TEKA with Suzuki, Red Bull with Yamaha De Carli on top of those who were already present; Red Bull with KTM and Monster with Yamaha and CAS Honda.

Fair interaction with the teams

Q: How is Youthstream dealing with the World Championship teams?

A: The continuous dialogue is the base of our relation. At the Grand Prix’s I spend time talking with representatives of teams and manufacturer, plus Youthstream has a dedicated department dealing with the teams in terms of sport and business administration, including paddock and infrastructures. Each single team is important to us, each single team has rights and duties. The process is transparent and there are no longer the old interferences which used to oppress the smaller squads.

Q: Is Youthstream acting to stop these interferences or does the promoter remain neutral?

A: We have the duty to promote the Championship in fairness, and when this fairness is in danger we have the duty to act. These days we are working to support the experienced teams against the decisions of some manufacturers that would like younger and especially richer teams to replace them. This is not a fair selection, we will not allow that committed long time World Championship teams will be forced to stop their activities for no reason.  One of our responsibilities is to protect the jobs we have created over the last five years with the evolution of the FIM Motocross World Championship, and at the same time we keep the older and more established teams we are happy to have some new professional teams join us.

At the moment we have around 30 teams ready to race in the 2010 World Championship, with their budgets covered and with their equipment ready to go, this is a sufficient number to run a good World Championship. I believe that with this set up all the good riders from 15 to 30 years old will surely have their place.

Riding in the World Championship is a well paid job

Q: Can a rider make a living out of professional Motocross?

A: Once you call something “professional” it mean it must provide you with the means to survive and this is the case of professional Motocross. Nowadays all riders entered through our system of Officially Approved Teams have a salary going from a base of 20,000 euro until a peak of 800,000 euro, though we are pushing to have a minimum salary of 24,000 euro. Looking back at some years ago most of the riders were privateers without salary and most had to cover their own expenses.  It’s normal that everyone wants more, but if a rider is fast then he can make a comfortable living with Motocross, all the fast up and coming young riders immediately enter into a professional structure with good contracts; see Musquin, Roczen, Paulin, Herlings, etc.

Q: Can a rider feel safe when he does his job then?

A: Unfortunately the mechanical sports carry a rate of risk but we do our best to reduce it. First of all on our tracks there are all the necessary medical services requested by the FIM regulations, which is the base to guarantee the safety. Furthermore Dr. Scevola, Clinica Mobile, is carrying out an excellent work at all the events. Since we manage the World Championship we have always cooperated with the local organizers to remove trees and stones, we have introduced the safety netting, we have moved the areas for the public further away to increase their safety, we have eliminated the dust, etc. If one day we will have the support of all manufacturers, not just KTM, we could even hire a professional medical backup staff following the whole series with their mobile unit.

Dr. Moreno Scevola in action

Q: Where are the many injuries you had this year coming from?

A: While the World Championship has only 15 races, which are run on highly organized and maintained venues, the calendar of a professional rider is full of events, around 35 a year. This is too many because most of these races are run on inadequate tracks having no maintenance or facilities. 70% of the World Championship riders’ injuries came from training sessions, National and/or International events.  MX1 has more injuries than MX2 because the 450 bikes are too heavy and too powerful; this is something for the manufacturers to think about.

Sponsors thinking of business

Q: Part of the promoter’s work is introducing money in the series via the sponsors. What has Youthstream done in this aspect?

A: Youthstream is well aware of this need. I can briefly list some of the multinational companies investing in the World Championship because of our promotional work: Red Bull, Monster Energy, Teka, Hyundai, Braun, Rockstar, Welcome to Istanbul and Casino Bonver have all entered the series where they can see business opportunities. There are many like them, and none of them are leaving, they are actually reinforcing their presence for the future. Next year we will have other big sponsors joining forces with us and with other two teams.

Our work is to create a bigger and better World Championship with more and more TV and media coverage, we have created a great stage where manufacturers, teams and riders can show themselves and attract important sponsors, and we want to continue improving this.  Keep in mind that only 10 years ago the majority of riders were privateers and some teams had a staff of 2 - 6 people working for them from a van of a maximum of 6 to 8 meters, today most teams have 10 to 20 people working for them, a minimum of 1 semi-truck (18 meters) and in many cases teams have a second semi-truck for their hospitality.

Q: Overseas events?

A:  I personally believe that for the value of the FIM Motocross World Championship the overseas events are very important, it’s essential to go to growing markets where there are possibilities of many spectators and the possibility to attract more and a wider variety of sponsors, we believe it’s positive for the teams and for all participating in the World Championship – but the Japanese manufacturers are making a strong lobbing against this, and this is unacceptable because in reality they use the World Championship to promote their products all over the world and develop their motorcycle, but then they tell the teams that they only have a ‘European budget’.

Q: What do you dream for the Motocross over the future 10 years?

A:  You have to take this just as my dreams:

  • To have 18 Grand Prix events including USA and/or Brazil and/or Russia and/or China and/or India and/or Indonesia and/or Australia and /or South Africa, and 12 in Europe.
  • To see 12 teams in MX1 and 15 in MX2 all with 2 riders.
  • To see all the manufacturers officially present with 1 team in MX1 and 1 team in MX2.
  • To have the live TV coverage not in Europe, in the Middle East and in Asia, but instead covering the five continents like we already have with the worldwide live coverage on Internet via Freecaster.
  • To have at least one big sponsor per team like TEKA, Red Bull, Braun, Hyundai, Casino Bonver, Monster, Arcese, Mormaii and Welcome to Istanbul.
  • To increase the quality of the infrastructures and the welcome for the fans at Grand Prix events.
  • To have a lighter and less powerful bike for the MX1 class so that riders are able to enjoy and play on the bike and allow the rider ride the bike, and not the bike ride the rider!

If you give me a wand I will do this today, but we do not have a wand therefore we have to all work very hard together to maybe one day achieve these goals.

Australian off-road great and former GNCC overall champ Shane Watts is in for S.C. Endurocross

Carolinas local will be a hometown favorite for the fans at the Florence Civic Center, brings with him a pretty impressive resume to his first-ever GEICO EnduroCross event

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Sept., 2 2009) – Big news out of GEICO Powersports AMA EnduroCross, presented by E3 Spark Plugs, headquarters today as Australian off-road great Shane Watts has registered to race the South Carolina EnduroCross round at Florence’s Civic Center, Sept. 12th.

Watts, a longtime KTM-affiliated competitor who runs off-road riding schools these days, brings with him quite the impressive competition resume to the Florence EnduroCross. A six-time Australian Enduro champ, 500cc Australian MX champ, 1997 World Enduro champ, ’98 International Six Days Enduro overall winner (on a 125cc bike!) and 2000 Grand National Cross Country Series (GNCC) overall champion, Watts will see if he can’t shake things up versus fellow KTM racer Taddy Blazusiak – winner of the first two GEICO EnduroCross rounds – and the Monster Energy/Kawasaki contingent of defending series champ, Ricky Dietrich and Damon Huffman.

“This is big – getting Watts in the starting gate at Florence,” said Mike Karsting VP of Events for Source Interlink Media. “It’s not like a well-known pro motocross racer coming in and racing GEICO EnduroCross for the first time. Watts’ got a legitimate shot to make the podium,”

GEICO EnduroCross caught up with Watts this morning and got the lowdown on next weekend’s race in Florence and how he feels he might fair, along with what he’s been doing race-wise and to stay in shape as of late.

GEICO EnduroCross: From Australian off-road and MX champions to the ISDE to GNCCs, you’ve pretty much won everything an off-road racer can. So what’s appealing to you about running an EnduroCross event?

Shane Watts: “There’s certainly many different reasons for me to give EnduroCross a go, ranging from it being great promotion for my Dirt Wise Academy off-road riding schools and instructional DVDs through to helping satisfy that racing bug and to give me better preparation for the quickly approaching ISDE over in Portugal during October. If I do well in South Carolina it could possibly also give me an extension of my racing career instead of having to do very tiring three-hour cross country races. My old body really struggles with those races now days! Plus I’d love to get on the box so as to give a kick start to the marketing campaign of DirtBaby clothing (www.dirtbaby.com), my wife’s new motorcycle casual clothing company.”

GEICO EnduroCross: One could make the argument that you’ve got ‘nothing to gain and everything to lose’ by racing an EnduroCross. Like we said, you’ve won it all in the past and anything less might not be up to your lofty standards as a champion. Could that put added pressure on you for Florence (S.C.)?

Shane Watts: “Yes, you certainly could look at it like that, or you could view it like I am as in I have everything to gain. My previous results are there forever and will always stand as testament to my ability to ride a dirt bike so one bad result isn’t going to tarnish that. Possible injury is the only downside for racing this event but that is all relative to the risks to take, just as with anything in life.”

GEICO EnduroCross: Good point. Have you got to check out an EnduroCross live? What are your thoughts on the event?

Shane Watts: “I’ve only seen video footage of the events, and had some practice sessions. For sure, it is extremely intense and you need to be very precise and try to ride mistake free. That’s a big ask when your heart rate is maxed out. It’s not until after the race that I’ll have a much better idea of what my thoughts will. If I’m on the podium then obviously I’ll be says that it was great!”

GEICO EnduroCross: Do you think EnduroCross would go over big in your native Australia?

Shane Watts: “Aussie’s love a good blood sport, so they would definitely be way into it. Maybe that’s another venture that my wife and I could investigate in setting up some time in the future.”

GEICO EnduroCross: Knowing your riding style, what areas of EnduroCross do you think you’ll excel at? And which of the obstacles are going to give you the most difficulty?

Shane Watts: “I used to be real good at continually being very precise with my wheel placement and with the coordination of my controls (throttle/clutch/brake), but previous injury has dampened that somewhat. My biggest attribute used to be being able to push through the exhaustion barrier and harness adrenalin to get me to a higher physical output. Hopefully I haven’t lost too much of that! But definitely my biggest obstacle without doubt is my lack of time on the bike and sub-par conditioning due to being very focused with my present business and family commitments.”

GEICO EnduroCross: What, if anything, have you done to prepare yourself for Florence?

Shane Watts: “I’ve tried riding as much as possible while focusing on getting my heart rate real high. But, unfortunately, most of my days are spent either watching students ride at my schools, shipping out DVDs, making DirtBaby clothing, or changing diapers! I’ve have had plenty of time while driving or flying to each of my schools to think about what I’ll say up on the podium. Positive thinking goes a long way!!!”

GEICO EnduroCross: Which of the guys racing the series have you raced before? Who’ve you been most impressed with?

Shane Watts: “I’ve probably raced against most of those guys at some stage during my career. Once the gate drops everyone has a chance at victory. I do know though when you’re at the Pro level that each one of your competitors is extremely talented.”

GEICO EnduroCross: Is this just a one-off deal seeing as how you live in nearby North Carolina? Or, if you have a good time and ride up to your standards, might we see you at another EnduroCross round?

Shane Watts: “If I have an enjoyable time and excellent result I’m thinking about doing the final race in Vegas. It really comes down to whether I can spare the time to do the necessary preparation required and also whether the risk equals the reward.”

GEICO EnduroCross: Thanks, Shane. We’ll look forward to seeing you next weekend, Sept. 12th, at the Florence Civic Center. You’ll definitely have a bunch of fans there hollerin’ for you.

Shane Watts: “Thanks a lot. Really looking forward to this.”

Those sponsors along with KTM that have Watts’ back include: www.ktmhutt.com, Dirt Wise riding schools and DVDs, DirtBaby clothing, Stillwell Performance suspension, Fun Mart Cycles, Dirt Tricks sprockets, Ariete goggles, IMS products, Maxxis, Fasst Co. Flexx handlebars, Domino grips, www.offroadchampions.com, GPR Stabilizers and DeCal Works graphics.

Combining multiple off road motorcycle racing disciplines such as western U.S. desert enduro racing and eastern cross country racing with technical trials-style riding, GEICO EnduroCross showcases riders from all over the world that excel in these fields.
