With close to 300 guests gathering for the Induction Dinner and Award Ceremony, McGrath had this to say about his newly bestowed honor, “I am just so happy to be part of this wonderful event and honored that the ABA has presented ME with this Lifetime Achievement Award, I'm really kinda surprised by it all, but pleasantly surprised of course!”

McGrath, along with six other honorees, represent BMX racing and Freestyle BMX from the 1970's and  1980's and one industry contributor. The inductees are Danny Oakley (1960's and 1970's pioneer); Jeremy McGrath (past BMXer lifetime achievement award); D.D. Leone (1980's Professional Racer); Troy Lee (BMX Industry contributor, Troy Lee Designs); R.L. Osborn and Mike Buff (legendary BMX Action Trick Team); and Eddie Fiola (freestyle Pioneer). There will also be special recognition given to Clayton John (retired ABA President) and Bernie Anderson (retired ABA Chairman of the Board), current BMX Hall of Fame members, for their recent induction into the U.S. Bicycling Hall Of Fame in Davis, CA .
“It is a great honor to induct these individuals into the National BMX Hall of Fame and it is only appropriate that these individual's accomplishments will be highlighted for future generations in the BMX Hall of Fame” stated B.A. Anderson, American Bicycle Association's (
www.ababmx.com) CEO.

INDUCTEES FOR CLASS OF 2009:

Danny Oakley
: Danny began organized BMX racing in 1970 and retired in 1981. He was instrumental in establishing organized BMX racing, and numerous tracks in Southern and Northern California, during a time when organized BMX did not formally exist. A few such tracks are The Downhill Track of Baldwin Park in 1970, Landels Park, Hamann Park and The Downhill Track of Mount Tamalpais in 1974. Danny Oakley, a true Legend of our sport, raced for such legendary teams as Bikette & Dirtmaster, Rick`s Bike Shop, Silver Shield, MotoPRO, Speedo and Mongoose. He was instrumental in forming Pro Products, Inc., MotoPRO and Speedo. Moreover, Danny was instrumental in designing product for Pro Products, Inc., MotoPRO, Speedo, B.M.X. Products, Inc., and Mongoose, including the infamous Moosegoose, a 20 inch BMX race frame Danny designed for taller riders and racers (Danny is quite tall himself). He has conducted BMX Racing Clinics and Demonstrations in the United States and in Europe . He has participated in NBA, UBR, NPSA, CBA and ABA sanctioned races. Danny raced and won numerous titles and championships, such as 4-Time West Coast Champion, 6-Time Northern California Champion, NPSA National Champion and NORA CUP, to name a few. Danny was one of the racers that were featured in the BMX episode of CHiPs.
Jeremy McGrath: Often referred to as "MC", "Showtime", and "The King" (meaning the "King of Supercross"), Jeremy is the winningest Supercross racer ever, winning seventy-four 250cc Main Events and capturing seven 250cc Championships between 1993 and 2000. He also earned twelve AMA Motocross titles, 2 Motocross Des Nations titles, and an X-Games Gold Medal and Bronze Medal in his career. As a young boy he began racing BMX and became one of the leading BMX racers in the nation and even had a "factory" ride with VDC. At the age of 15, McGrath decided to try his luck at BMX`s big brother, motocross, where he was able to translate many of the racing skills he had mastered throughout his years of racing BMX. After just three years riding as an amateur, McGrath made his AMA debut in 1989 and the rest, as they say, is history. Throughout all his fame and success in motocross, Jeremy always kept his BMX roots. He worked with GT bicycles and even had a complete BMX bike dubbed the "Showtime" model.

D.D. Leone: Born Dominick Donald Leone Jr., but better known in the BMX world as "D.D.", he began racing in 1980, at the age of 14 years old. From Louisiana , D.D. was known as the original "Ragin` Cajun" and helped put Louisiana and the Southeast on the BMX map. He raced for over 12 years, participating in over 2000 races and won or placed in 1300. Like most racers, he started off racing for local shops. His determination and winning ways on the national scene got him some much needed recognition and before long he was hooked up by Redline with a "Factory" sponsorship 1982. Later in his career, he rode for Free Agent and Kastan. D.D. was always in the hunt for the ABA Pro Cruiser title. He officially retired from BMX and is currently working and living in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He is also involved with the local BMX scene in Louisiana helping out at ABA `s Gretna BMX track.

Troy Lee: Troy was a long time motocross racer that started Troy Lee Designs in 1981 by following in his father's footsteps of helmet painting. Troy first worked with BMX racer Dave "Custom Cully" Cullinan by custom painting his helmets. This led to Troy working with many of the top BMX pros around the world. Troy expanded his business from helmet painting to helmet manufacturing in the mid 90`s, with the "Edge" helmet being the first. Then in 1998, Troy launched a full apparel line. Today, his business has grown from helmet painting to one of the top brands in the industry. Troy Lee Designs now has a catalog that spans over 50 pages of product, including the innovative bicycle helmet, the D2, and a line of protective gear. Troy enjoys working with "the world's fastest racers" from F1 to Indy Car to NASCAR, Motocross to Enduro to Freestyle, Dirt Track to Road Racing, MTB to BMX, and everything in between. Troy `s main goal is to make and design the best products in the world for the "the world's fastest racers".

R.L. Osborn & Mike Buff: Although they are best known as the "Godfathers of Freestyle", both R.L. and Buff got their start as BMX racers. At age 11, R.L. was part of the first ever "BMX test team" for Bicycle Motocross News (from late `75 to late `76). An entrepreneur at the early age of 14, R.L. started up his own company, Hot Stickies. As the son of BMX Hall of Famer, Bob Osborn, R.L. went on to become one of the main test riders for BMX ACTION magazine. In 1978, R.L. teamed up with fellow BMXA employee Bob Haro to form the very first freestyle team, which made its debut at ABA `s Winternationals in Chandler , AZ. Local Torrance hot-shoe racer Mike Buff joined the BMX ACTION test team in 1979. Buff soon crossed over to freestyle and in the absence of Haro, the longtime teaming of R.L. & Buff began. As the "Nerd herd", R.L. & Buff were vital in setting BMX trends during the 80`s, from jumping styles in bike tests to the 4x4 vehicle craze, to clothing fashions and hairdos. Each year from `82 until `88, the BMX ACTION trick team (as well as R.L.`s later sponsorship with Redline and General) spread the BMX gospel. In all, R.L. and Buff took their annual Summer Tours to 48 states in the U.S. and over 15 countries, taking BMX to places where racers and tracks couldn't, turning many kids on to BMX in one form or another.

Eddie Fiola:   Eddie is a true legend in BMX and arguably the best rider to EVER ride a skatepark. Eddie is credited with being the first rider to do a 540 in a pipe.  Eddy won four " BMX Action Nora Cup" awards and five " King Of The Skatepark" titles. At the time, the " King Of The Skatepark" competitions were as big in the freestyle world as the X-Games and Dew Tour are today. In the early days, Eddie was sponsored by Bottema Forks, SE Racing, Haro, and Premier Helmets. At the end of 1982, Eddie was hired by Kuwahara to design, ride, and promote the E.T. Freestyle bike. Eddie was also the man behind one of the most famous freestyle bike designs to this day, the GT PRO Performer. It is rumored that the movie "RAD" was loosely based on the life story of Eddie Fiola. Although Eddie did not play the main character, he was a stunt double in the movie. Today, Eddie works in the movie industry as a stunt man and is credited with working on such great movies as The Italian Job, Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Dukes of Hazard, just to name a few.

The ABA BMX “Hall of Fame” is the who's who of BMX and consists of riders and industry members who have made notable contributions to the sport of BMX racing.  Each year since 1985, a select few BMX (Bicycle Motocross) riders and industry veterans have been inducted into this elite group of individuals. In addition to the “Early BMX Pioneers”, “BMX Racers” and “Industry Members” categories, a “Freestyle Pioneers” category is being added to the BMX Hall of Fame for the first time ever. This will be a great addition to the National BMX Hall of Fame, allowing many talented riders to be honored.

Ricky Carmichael

No. 4 Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 20 of 25 — Las Vegas Motor Speedway

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS IS ALWAYS MEMORABLE:  Ricky Carmichael is no stranger to the bright lights, glitz and glamour of Las Vegas.  In the history of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), no other rider has won as many championships (15) and races (150) as Carmichael. He was able to finalize his last Supercross title in “sin city” and recorded three US Open titles at one of Las Vegas’ biggest venues the MGM Grand.

"Las Vegas has been very special to me in my Supercross career,” Carmichael said. “I have always liked coming out to Vegas because of my racing history there.  I have been very successful in that city.  I was able to win three US Open titles at the MGM Grand and wrap up the 2006 Supercross title there.  I have a lot of good memories."

TOP DOG: Of the 13 Truck Series events Carmichael has competed in this season, he has spent 959 of 2143 laps running in the top-15. That is nearly 50 percent race event spent running 15th or better, which ranks third among rookies this season.

PICKING SPOTS: One major learning curve Carmichael has been focused on during the 2009 Truck Series season is learning where and how to pass.  Carmichael’s spotter, veteran driver Andy Houston, is on the radio week in and week out coaching Carmichael and helping him find a line for his truck.  Thus far in 2009, Carmichael has completed 284 pass, 156 of those through the turns and 126 down the straight-a-ways.

BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER RICKY CARMICHAEL:

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON GOING TO LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY?

"I have actually never been to Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  I have heard from everyone I have talked with in the garage area that it is a really fun and fast place to run.  I'm excited to be able to try my hand at it. I really want to be able to learn the track quickly.  I think we have run quite a few venues similar to it this season and I hope to have a good base for it.  As always my goal is to walk out of there with a top-10 finish."

WHEN YOU ARE IN LAS VEGAS DO YOU EVER GET A CHANCE TO RELAX OR IS IT ALL WORK ALL THE TIME?

"Oh yeah, I would say when we go to Las Vegas it is 15 percent play and 85 percent work.  I enjoy catching some shows and laying pool side.  I am a really big fan of the Winn. We like to go down there and hang out."

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 4 Monster Energy team will take chassis No.028 to Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  The last time chassis No. 028 took to the track was at Chicagoland Speedway with Carmichael behind the wheel.  The No. 4 Monster Energy team recorded an 18th-place finish at Chicago.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week J.R. Fitzpatrick made his New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) debut behind the wheel of the No. 4 KHI entry.  Fitzpatrick experienced trouble early on in the first practice session, hitting the wall and forcing the No. 4 team to pull out the back-up truck.  Qualifying in the 24th position, Fitzpatrick’s goal was survival. Fitzpatrick stayed out of trouble and was able to come away from NHMS with an 18th-place finish.

Mariana Balbi becomes first woman to race MX1 Motocross Grand Prix at Canelinha

CANELINHA (BRAZIL), 13 September 2009 – Four years after the first ever attempt of a woman rider to race a Grand Prix, Brazilian Mariana Balbi did race the Honda Grand Prix of Brazil in the MX1 class marking the first ever female appearance in a Grand Prix heat.

Before Balbi’s achievement Stefy Bau, currently the Youthstream WMX Manager, was the first ever woman to try and race a Grand Prix. Bau’s attempt dates back to 2005 when the Italian tried to race her home event in Castiglione del Lago. Honda mounted Bau was 20th in the Last Chance Qualifying Practice –the last chance to take part to the Grand Prix after the two Qualifying Heats-   and was forced to sit out of the event which she had entered in the MX2 class.

At Budds Creek in 2007 Puerto Rico’s Tarah Gieger became the first female rider to race the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations but the Yamaha star never tried to race a Grand Prix.

This year Brazilian Mariana Balbi instead made it at her first attempt during the Honda Grand Prix of Brazil in Canelinha. Honda mounted Balbi qualified 28th and went through the two heats to take 24th and 20th. Eventually Balbi was 24th overall in the MX1 class to become the first ever female rider to qualify and race a Grand Prix in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The series of female achievements in the FIM Motocross World Championship includes also the two FIM Women’s Motocross World Titles clinched by Livia Lancelot (2008) and Stephanie Laier (2009).

Marvin Musquin - The 2009 FIM MX2 World Champion

CANELINHA (BRAZIL), 13 September 2009 – Two years after leaving the UEM EMX2 series with a bitter fourth, 19 year old Musquin made up for it by grasping this year’s MX2 World Title which remains in the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team after last year’s win of Rattray.

The season of the young Frenchman was distinguished by several important achievements such as his maiden podium appearance (Faenza), his maiden GP win and pole (both at Sevlievo). Though a troublesome switch of manufacturer from Honda to KTM forced Musquin off the Swedish GP, something he made up for with a strong end of the season and the eventual Title.

Musquin in action in Brazil

After Rattray won the 2008 MX2 Title, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing retains the number one plate courtesy of Musquin who is following 2006 MX2 World Champion Christophe Pourcel in the records of the MX2 World Champions from France.

MUSQUIN’S CAREER IN THE FIM MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Musquin’s professional career started off in the European Championships, the best preparation for all riders aiming at the Grand Prix series. Winning the 85cc series, Kawasaki mounted Musquin moved on to the EMX2 class and progressed dramatically together with the Bud Racing squad. The Frenchman went from taking 24th in the 2006 series to a solid fourth in the 2007 EMX2 campaign which was won by countryman Paulin.

Courtesy of his brilliant 2007 season Musquin was offered the chance to race the Grand Prix in Faenza where he showed an impressive potential before fading to sixth in heat one. The performance meant he was ready to join his colleagues in the World Championship which is what he did in 2008, after working hard in the winter to gain the endurance he missed at his first outing in Italy.

Musquin moved to the NGS squad and to Honda for his first ever season in the FIM Motocross World Championship. The all French association of Musquin and team manager Losito showed a good potential but an injury at the Czech GP was a big blow for the duo aiming at a top ten finish in the MX2 standings. Musquin broke his collarbone and a bone in his foot, missing two Grand Prix’s but coming back at Faenza to seal a 14th place in the Championship.

2009 saw a renewed Musquin at the gate of Faenza, where the season started in the mud. The French went straight on his maiden podium by taking third overall behind Van Horebeek and overall winner Paulin, who would have been his main rival together with team mate Goncalves. Despite taking his maiden win in Bulgaria at round two, Musquin had to wait until Bellpuig before snatching the red plate from Paulin. At the following Grand Prix Musquin lined up with a factory KTM, leaving Honda and Team NGS. Despite being new to the bike, Musquin went on to win that and the French GP and remained on the podium until Sweden, where he sat out of the event due to issues related to his recent switch of manufacturer. His comeback to action at Lommel marked another win for the now established factory KTM rider who was joined by team mate Goncalves in the top two. A mechanical failure forced Musquin off the Czech podium but the 19 year old was back to action winning the Dutch and Brazilian G P, ending his most successful GP campaign to date with the MX2 World Title.

Musquin’s 2010 plans will see the French youngster remain with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team to defend the Title. Before 2009 ends, Musquin will be back to action at the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations at Franciacorta, Italy, on the October 4 weekend together with other team France members Paulin and Aubin.

MX2

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Musquin won his first ever World Title with gallantry as the 19 year old from France went on to win both moto’s. Musquin first beat team mate and runner up in the Championship Goncalves in heat one. Musquin moved past the Portuguese and pulled away to take victory and being crowned World Champion. In heat two he won a dogfight for first against the likes of Roczen and Frossard.

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Roczen was second in moto one but failed to wrap up his second career Grand Prix as he finished again second to Musquin in the final heat. The German young gun was second overall.

CLS’ Frossard came back to the podium after he took pole in the morning’s session. The Frenchman had a bad start in heat one and recovered to fourth, then fought tooth and nail to clinch third in the final moto and mount on the podium.

Other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Goncalves was a disappointed fourth overall at the end of the Grand Prix which he entered with a Title chance.

KTM fellow rider Teillet rounded off the top five ahead of Guarneri.

A technical issue hampered Paulin’s Grand Prix but the Bud Racing Kawasaki PSM’s man ended third overall in the Championship.

Taddy Blazusiak Remains Undefeated In GEICO AMA EnduroCross Series With His Third Win In A Row In Florence South Carolina

Geoff Aaron and Cory Graffunder join Taddy on the podium

Photos by: Jesse Ziegler

FLORENCE, SC (September 12, 2009) – KTM’s Taddy Blazusiak took his third EnduroCross main event win in a row tonight over 10 time National Trials champion, Geoff Aaron.  Aaron was riding a two wheel drive Christini KTM.  Zip-Ty Husquvarna mounted Cory Graffunder rounded out the podium for his second EnduroCross main event in a row.

The day started with Taddy Blazusiak setting the fastest lap time during the afternoon qualifying session, which puts the riders on the track by themselves for a single hot lap to determine heat race starting positions.  Mike Brown on the Muscle Milk backed KTM took second followed by Geoff Aaron, Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker and Cory Graffunder.

After several exciting qualifying races filled the eleven rider main event, it was Aaron that touched the first 35 inch sequoia ahead of the pack to collect the $500 Girardi wealth management holeshot award but he immediately got stock on that same log and was forced to work his way back into a podium position.  Graffunder, the Canadian off-road warrior stayed very close to Blazusiak for the first half of the main and seemed to be faster in some sections and quickly closed in any time Taddy made any kind of bobble. Graffunder ultimately made his own mistake and stalled his bike to allow Aaron past for second.  Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Damon Huffman worked his way into forth position after a tough first lap that found him near the back of the pack.  Colton Haaker rounded out the top five.

Shane Watts, the former GNCC champion made a valiant effort to at EnduroCross but ultimately missed making the main while Ricky Dietrich, the 2009 EnduroCross champion sat out this event to allow his broken foot to recover.

The Women’s Motocross and Supercross Foundation (WMXF) Announces Fundraiser to Help Injured Rider Justin Weeks

ANAHEIM, Calif., (Sept, 10 2009) – Justin Weeks was severely injured just over a week ago while practicing at Freelin MX in Michigan. Justin was involved in an accident that resulted in a broken jaw and damage to his spinal cord. The injury to his spine has left him with no feeling from the chest down.

Recently turned pro, Weeks is coming off of the two most successful races of his amateur career. Just over a month ago, Justin concluded his amateur career winning championships at Ponca City and Loretta Lynn’s amateur nationals, in the highly talented A class.

It’s times like this when our small community needs to pull together to help one of our own. The Women’s Supercross and Motocross Foundation will be hosting a week long eBay auction to help Justin and his family with the costs that have been associated with this terrible injury.

The response from fellow riders and companies has been astonishing! Some of the companies who have donated items for the Justin Weeks fundraiser include Thor MX, Rockstar, Monster, One Industries, Pant Saggin’ Dezign, Skull Candy, Ogio, Answer, RG3, FMF, DVS, Glen Helen Raceway, Competitive Edge MX Park, Spring Creek MX and more!

Several riders have contributed with the donation of autographed gear. These riders include James Stewart, Michael Byrne, Nico Izzi, Ryan Villopoto, Austin Stroupe, plus 2009 Outdoor National Champions Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey!

Also included in the auction is a ride day with professional Motocross / Supercross rider, Austin Stroupe.  IN addition to the exclusive ride day with Austin, the highest bidder will receive a set of Thor racing apparel!

The eBay auction will begin Monday, September 14th. If you would like to donate products or services for the fundraiser please email Jammi Robertson at jrobertson@thormx.com.  For any additional questions, please contact Antoinette Gress at wmxfmedia@aol.com .

The WMXF is a non-profit organization (501 c3) founded in 2003 to enhance the motocross & supercross racing community.  WMXF's mission is to support racers or crew members who suffer racing injury; provide support to those who suffer serious misfortune; provide financial support to benevolent organizations; and contribute to the well-being of families in the professional motocross/supercross community.

Congressional hearing set for Thursday to get information on the law that bans the sale of dirtbikes and ATVs for kids

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Federal lawmakers have scheduled a hearing for Thursday, Sept. 10, to receive an update on the status of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) that essentially banned the sale of kids' dirtbikes and ATVs, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

The AMA is urging all concerned motorcyclists and ATVers to contact their federal lawmakers to exempt motorcycles and ATVs from the law, which took effect in February. The law stopped the sale of dirt bikes and ATVs designed for children age 12 and under, although the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) subsequently issued a stay of enforcement of the measure until May 2011.

Under the law, all youth products containing lead must now have less than 300 parts per million by weight. The CPSC has interpreted the law to apply to various components of youth-model motorcycles and ATVs, including the engine, brakes, suspension, battery and other mechanical parts. Even though the lead levels in these parts are small, they are still above the minimum threshold.

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold Thursday's hearing, titled: "Consumer Product Safety Commission Oversight: Current Issues and a Vision for the Future." CPSC Chairwoman Inez Tenenbaum will be the only testifier.

This hearing is the first one sponsored by this subcommittee since the CPSIA passed 13 months ago. It is important that motorcyclists and ATV riders let Congress know that they are concerned about the lead-content requirements of the CPSIA, and that they want youth-model off-highway vehicles excluded from those requirements.

Riders should contact their U.S. representatives and let them know how the CPSIA has created a severe and unwarranted disruption to families who ride together responsibly, and a deleterious effect on youth amateur racing. Because the fastest way to permanently address this issue is through legislation, riders should urge their representatives to support H.R. 1587, introduced by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-At Large-Mont.), to exempt youth-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA.

You can find contact information for your elected officials at AmericanMotorcyclist.com. From the homepage, click on "Rights," then "Issues & Legislation," and enter your zip code in the "Find your Officials" box. Additionally, a prewritten e-mail is available for you to send to your representative immediately by following the "Take Action" option and entering your information.

ATV riders can do the same by going through the Rapid Response Center on ATVAonline.com.

It is particularly important to contact members of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. They are U.S. Reps.:

  • Bobby Rush (D-Chicago-Tinley Park, Ill.), chairman
  • Jan Schakowsky (D-Chicago-Des Plaines, Ill.) vice chairwoman
